Leo Frank Case
During a time where child labor laws did not exist, a girl by the name of Mary Phagen was found murdered under a pencil factory. Leo Frank the Jewish man who gave Mary her weeks payment was a suspect and put on trial for the murder. The state's main witness was a black janitor who's name was Jim Conley he said that Frank had something to do with Phagen's death and that he witnessed him the night of the murder. Based on his sole testimony Leo Frank was convicted and sentenced to death. The Georgian governor did not believe Frank was guilty after reviewing the case and changed his death sentence to life in prison hoping he would be set free. Outraged citizens who later became The Knights of Mary Phagen went to Frank's cell, kidnapped him, and lynched him. This trial later was reopened and some evidence proves that Frank was in fact innocent.
After the lynching of Leo Frank, The Knights of Mary Phagen became the new Ku Klux Klan of Georgia. At the same time, angered Jewish community members created Anit-Defamation League to go against the Anti-Semitism that was one of the major reasons that Frank was lynched.
